Glossary

Hyperbaric chamber terms, in plain words.

The 22 terms that appear in our specifications, quotations and drawings — ATA, BIBS, flange, access width, 93% ± 3% — defined the way our engineers use them. Equipment terms only; no medical claims.

ATA
Atmosphere absolute — the total pressure inside the chamber, including normal atmospheric pressure (1.0 ATA at sea level). SkelundTech hard-shell chambers operate at 2.0 ATA; soft chambers at 1.2–1.5 ATA.
Hard-shell chamber
A chamber with a rigid steel shell, fixed windows and a door, run from a separate all-in-one main unit. SkelundTech's LUMEN, VISTA, ARC, ORION and ORION COMPACT are hard-shell chambers at 2.0 ATA, weighing about 500–1,185 kg. Read more
Soft chamber
A chamber with a flexible fabric shell that holds its shape under pressure, run from an 85 kg all-in-one unit. REST, DRIFT and COVE operate at 1.2–1.5 ATA and weigh 30–50 kg. Read more
All-in-one main unit
The cabinet beside the chamber that combines the oxygen concentrator, the air compressor and the air conditioning. The standard 10L unit has one 10L concentrator and two compressors; the optional 20L unit has two concentrators and three compressors and adds BIBS. Read more
Oxygen concentrator
A device that separates oxygen from room air. SkelundTech concentrators supply 93% ± 3% oxygen at the concentrator outlet.
93% ± 3%
The oxygen concentration at the concentrator supply. It is not the oxygen level of the air inside the pressurized chamber, and it is not a medical claim. Read more
BIBS
Built-In Breathing System: a mask with an oxygen line in and an exhaust line that carries exhaled air out of the chamber. The user breathes the supply directly and the cabin air stays fresher. On SkelundTech chambers it comes with the optional 20L unit and switches to standard mode with one switch. Read more
10L / 20L
The two all-in-one main units for hard-shell chambers. 10L: standard, 2,000 W / 20 A at 110 V or 1,500 W / 8 A at 220 V. 20L with BIBS: optional, double the oxygen output, 2,700 W / 25 A or 2,500 W / 13 A. Read more
Pressurization / depressurization
Raising the chamber to its working pressure and bringing it back to atmospheric pressure. LUMEN is documented at about 15 minutes up and about 12 minutes down from 2.0 ATA.
Access width
The narrowest width a chamber body can be reduced to for the route into the room — not a doorway clearance. LUMEN 770 mm (central body), ORION COMPACT 830 mm, ARC 860 mm, ORION 880 mm, VISTA 1,400 mm. Read more
Side modules / central body
LUMEN's shell is built in three flanged sections: two side modules bolted to a 770 mm central body, covered by outer metal covers. They come off only when the route into the building needs it. Read more
Flange
A ring welded to the end of a shell section with bolt holes around it, so two sections can be bolted together with a seal between them. Segmented chambers such as LUMEN's modules and the HORIZON design join at flanges. Read more
PEMF seat
A seat with flat pulsed-electromagnetic-field coil pads built into the seat back, run from its own controller. Optional on LUMEN, VISTA, ARC and ORION. No health claims are made. Read more
Infrared panels
LED near-infrared panels inside the chamber: single, dual (head and foot) on all five hard-shell models; three panels on an adjustable arm on LUMEN and VISTA only. Read more
Illuminated door / entry step
LED lighting built into the door frame (LUMEN and ORION only) and a step in front of the door with built-in lighting (optional on LUMEN, VISTA, ARC and ORION). Read more
Pulse oximeter
A fingertip sensor that reads blood-oxygen saturation (SpO₂) and pulse rate. Optional on all five hard-shell models. Read more
Negative-ion unit
A small unit inside the cabin that releases negative ions into the cabin air. Optional on all five hard-shell models. Read more
Dome window / flat PC window
Dome windows are the curved acrylic side windows of LUMEN and VISTA. ARC can be built with flat polycarbonate (PC) windows instead of its side glass, 50 mm thick, which brings it to 860 mm wide as built. Read more
OEM / ODM (private label)
Chambers built under your own brand: your logo, colour, interior, control interface and manuals on a SkelundTech platform (OEM), or a chamber engineered to your specification (ODM). Available from a single unit. Read more
Door delivery including taxes
A delivery scope SkelundTech can quote for the US and Australia: the chamber is delivered to your address with import taxes included in the quotation. You arrange unloading and carry-in. Read more
ISO 13485
An international standard for medical-device quality management systems. The factory entity behind SkelundTech holds an ISO 13485 certificate for the design, production and sales of commercial hyperbaric oxygen chambers. It certifies the quality system, not a product approval. Read more
EN 286-1 / EN 10207
European standards for simple unfired pressure vessels and the steels used for them. A type-test report to these standards covers the welding-related requirements for the model samples it lists. Read more
